Indianapolis Parking Meters

With the exception of free spaces, parking meters offer the most affordable parking option in Indianapolis. Here's everything you need to know about them:
  • Most meters cost either $1 or $1.50 per hour of parking on weekdays before 9 p.m. Make sure to verify the rates on the meter you're using.
  • Metered spots are free after 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday and holidays (includes New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day).
  • Meters downtown and in Broad Ripple now accept credit cards including MasterCard, Visa and American Express.
  • Many meters accept payment for a maximum of two hours, but some now allow up to four hours of parking. (In other words, use caution when you press the "max" button.) You are welcome to feed more change after your designated period expires: There's no penalty for staying in a spot all day.
  • Plan ahead for covered meters. Before and during major events, some metered spaces will not be available for parking. Don't risk getting towed.
  • Finally, make sure your tires are within one-foot of the curb. Our parking enforcement folks have been known to pull out measuring tape!
